Alan Devonshire.
It seems that every player that played with him at West Ham picks him as their favourite ever player.

I always watched Brooking but maybe I should have paid more attention to Dev.

Moore,Hurst and Peters made me respect West Ham...
Devonshire, Bonds and Brooking made me love it!

you only have to look at someone like pogba, of course he's talented but in the 70s/early 80s would be looked at like a French version of Carlton Palmer. the cunt isn't fit to lace the boots of Platini, Tigana or Giresse

Fair enough Miike, I mean the women goalkeepers reach the halfway line with their clearances.

not clever comparing 70s/80s football to the women's game. the standard now is much worse

Well my old Pedigree Chum... you ain't old enough if your only memories of one of our greatest players are on You Tube and you cant remember muddy pitches... what a sap... get off this thread and go and annoy some of the kids on here

Re: Alan Devonshire.
One particular memory of Dev is being 0-2 down to villa in the late eighties, Dev came on as sub at half time and turned the game around, he turned back the clock with that performance.

Also notable for it being the match that David Kelly scored his first goal for us.

Re: Alan Devonshire.
Look at the fucking goals they scored back then. Goal of the season then would be ten a penny now.

I'm old enough, don't you worry. I just don't live in a time capsule thinking everything used to be so much better.

Re: Alan Devonshire.
They run quicker now... yup I'll give you that... but then again if I wanted to see sportsman run around a lot I'd watch Athletics.... maybe at the London Stadium....

Not sure how old you are ED but I'd not really bang your chest like the supposed know it all gorilla you are unless you was there... to say that there was nothing wrong with the pitches is a fucking joke and a half....

You get all your footballing knowledge from YouTube... do a search on `1975 FA Cup Quarter final Arsenal West ham'... and then come back and admit you know shit ...

Re: Alan Devonshire.
Who has said he wasn't all that? Why are you making stuff up?

Things do get better. The 'good old days' were only good because you weren't old and bald then, and life was more enjoyable in general.

The standard of football now is miles better.

Re: Alan Devonshire.
Football's all about opinions, but I'm sure the minority would think that Devo wasn't all that.

I'll stick with thinking personally that I've seen no one as naturally skilled in a West Ham shirt since he retired, with the exception of Di Canio.

Grumpster 3:36 Wed Jan 25
Re: Alan Devonshire.
The standard wasn't appalling back then though.

Defending was much better for starters, as they weren't all concerned with playing the Hollywood ball out and they were also allowed to tackle. Didn't get any of that wrestling bollocks in the box.

You only think the skill level now is higher, as they play on carpets and tackling has almost been outlawed from the game.

Sorry Johan and Besty, have been told that football was shit back then and so your skills and Cryuff turns weren't worth a wank unfortunately.

Re: Alan Devonshire.
I've already said there's not doubt he was a great player for his time, Grumpster.

Have you bothered watching those clips provided earlier? You think the pitches alone were the reason for the appalling standard on show?

Yeah, course *rolls eyes*

Devo made it worth your while to watch West Ham play....Brooking was also great and the two of them together pure footballing joy!

Grumpster 2:59 Wed Jan 25
Re: Alan Devonshire.
Probably best ignoring anyone who is judging him on the videos they've seen on you tube really and also claiming the pitches weren't that bad. I mean yeah they were lovely until about October!

Di Canio is the only player I've seen since Devo who had so much skill in the locker.

Just pure natural talent and a superb footballing brain.

Oi flasher the standard is not much better now,the pace is alot quicket, and in Dev's day it was a contact sport not the theatre with all the diving and play acting!

I remember Kinkladze who played for Man City. He reminded me of Dev at times. Just a joy to watch really, that's my overwhelming memory of Dev, one of those players that just makes you smile like a kid watching him do his stuff. Wonderful player.

Blimey, no need for that, son.

Late night?
